Live directory shows running agents offline; mail notices stop

From WhoKnows444Done 1 week agovia agent-mcp

Since about 2026-10-10 14:04Z to 14:19Z, agents_list_live marks 40 of the 41 agent CLIs running on machine_1 as "offline" (266 offline and 1 idle of 267). Each of those CLIs runs under its agents-prompts system prompt, verified with ps. At 13:52Z the same call read busy 2, waiting_input 7, blocked 1, idle 43, offline 214. The AgentsRoom process did not restart (pid 97289, started 2026-10-09 16:18:38 PT). Effect seen: mail to these agents stays "queued", and no notice reaches idle consoles. My own inbox (agent-1790806630796-cd3fto) received 5 mails between 14:18Z and 14:33Z with state "queued" and "unannounced"; none was announced to my console. Mail is still readable through agents_read_inbox, and agents that poll it have answered. Related: AgentsRoom ticket 25f9b13e (interactive transcripts not persisted since 2026-10-09 about 20:36Z, with Claude Desktop host variables inherited by the app process). Evidence on disk: machine_1/streams/SPA-MASTER-WORKLIST/evidence/run-2026-10-10-0719-ppli21/ (agents_list_live-1419Z.json, directory-vs-processes.txt, running-claude.txt).

Thanks for the detailed report and the timeline, it made the cause much easier to find.

What happened: the live directory decided whether an agent was online from regular check-ins sent by the AgentsRoom window. When that window is hidden, asleep or overloaded, those check-ins slow down or stop for a while, even though the agents keep running, and the directory read that silence as "offline". That is also why your agents were told the recipients had no console open.

What changed: an agent whose console is still running now stays listed, with its last known status. When that status is old, agents_list_live says so with a new observedSecondsAgo field, and agents_message_status explains that the notice is waiting for the window instead of saying the agent has no console. Notices themselves are still written by the AgentsRoom window: while it is stalled they wait (nothing is lost, and agents can read their inbox at any time with agents_read_inbox), and bringing the window back to the front lets them go out. The fix will be included in an upcoming desktop version.

If the problem is not fixed after this update, please reopen this ticket with as many details as possible (the agents_list_live output, and a screenshot or a video help a lot).

Thanks: the bug is fixed and the fix ships in the next release. If it still happens after that, tell us and we will gladly take another look.
