File-content viewer modal is capped at a narrow width and clips wide code blocks, with no confirmed way to maximize it to fullscreen

From Pedro FigueiraDone 1 month ago

When I open a file in the content viewer (e.g. README.md), the modal opens as a narrow, centered panel that uses only a fraction of the window width, with large empty margins on both sides. On wide content this hides text: in the README "Quick start" block the shell commands are clipped on the right, so the trailing inline comments are only reachable by scrolling the code block sideways. Wide tables and long lines are cramped while most of the window sits empty.

How I investigated: UI observation only (read-only). I did not inspect the app bundle, so width values are described qualitatively, not read from source.

Causes, by explanatory weight:

  • PRIMARY: the modal width is capped far below the viewport, so anything wider overflows while most of the screen stays empty. This alone explains the clipping.
  • SECONDARY: no confirmed maximize/fullscreen affordance. A toolbar button with outward diagonal arrows exists, but its behavior is unverified; on the observed window it does not visibly resolve the clipping.
  • AGGRAVATOR: a wide code block scrolls horizontally inside an already narrow panel, so long lines are hidden twice.

Suggested fixes, by return on effort:

  1. Add a maximize / near-fullscreen toggle that grows the modal to (nearly) full window width and height, reclaiming the empty margins.
  2. Persist the user's preference across openings.
  3. If the diagonal-arrows icon already toggles size, make it reach full width/height or clarify its behavior.

Not claiming: not the exact CSS or width value, and not that the expand icon is "broken" - only that its effect is not discoverable and does not resolve the clipping.

Problem to solve

The file-content viewer opens as a narrow centered modal that uses a fraction of the window width. Wide code blocks and tables overflow and get clipped on the right, forcing horizontal scrolling to read them, while large empty margins sit on both sides. On big displays this wastes most of the screen and makes wide files harder to read than they need to be.

Proposed behavior

Add a maximize / near-fullscreen toggle to the viewer toolbar that grows the modal to (nearly) full window width and height. Optionally remember the preference across openings. Note: a toolbar button with outward diagonal arrows already looks like an expand control - if it exists for this, please confirm/fix it so it reaches full width/height; if not, add the toggle. Keep the centered default; just allow expanding.

Who benefits

Anyone who opens files (README, source, docs) in the built-in viewer on a medium or large display, especially when reading wide code blocks, long lines, or wide tables. Most acute on 1440p+ screens where the empty side margins are largest.

Acceptance criteria

I can expand the file viewer to use (nearly) the full window, so wide code blocks and tables are fully visible without horizontal scrolling, and the preference sticks between openings. The expand affordance is discoverable and clearly does what it looks like it does.
