Consider publishing an AUR package for easier install & updates on Arch-based distros

From ErunestDone 3 weeks ago

Currently it's distributed as an AppImage, which works but has a couple of downsides on Arch-based systems (Arch, CachyOS, Manjaro, EndeavourOS, etc.):

  • No automatic update mechanism — users have to manually check for and re-download new releases.
  • No integration with the system package manager (dependency tracking, clean uninstall, desktop entry/icon registration).
  • AppImages need to be made executable manually and often aren't auto-discovered by app launchers without extra setup.
  • Taskbar/dock icon duplication: the AppImage's .desktop launcher doesn't set a correct StartupWMClass, so the running Electron window isn't recognized as the same app as the pinned launcher. This results in two separate icons in the taskbar, and the running instance can't be pinned directly — only the launcher can, which then opens as a separate/duplicate entry instead of reusing the pinned icon.

Suggestion: Publish an AUR package (e.g. agentsroom-bin or agentsroom-appimage) that wraps the current AppImage release. This is low effort on your side:

  • A PKGBUILD that pulls the AppImage from your GitHub Releases, installs it with a proper .desktop file (including the correct StartupWMClass matching the Electron window class) and icon, optionally depending on appimage-run.
  • Once set up, AUR helpers (yay, paru, etc.) handle updates automatically whenever you cut a new release — no separate build pipeline needed on your end.
  • Doesn't require joining official Arch repos or going through a review process — it can be published and maintained via a personal AUR account, by you or a community volunteer.

Benefits for users:

  • One-command install and update (yay -S agentsroom-bin / yay -Syu).
  • Correct taskbar/dock grouping (no more duplicate/unpinnable icons).
  • Standard uninstall via the package manager instead of m

State (2026-09-18)

  • Taskbar icon duplication: fixed in code (ships with the next release). desktopName: "agentsroom.desktop" + linux.desktop.StartupWMClass: "agentsroom" in desktop/package.json, so the .desktop file name, the Wayland app_id and the X11 WM_CLASS instance are the same word. Both AppImage and .deb desktop entries come from the same generator. Details: memory note linux-packaging, context/briques/desktop.md.
  • AUR package: ready, not published. Recipe in packaging/aur/ (v1.179.0, real checksums), automatic bump + push in scripts/aur-publish.sh, called by build.sh step 13d on stable releases (no-op until AUR_REPO_DIR is set). Blocked: AUR account registration is temporarily closed. Plan B in progress on ticket 2905ebe7 (linked): the volunteer publishes from his account, we become co-maintainers later.
  • To revisit when registration reopens or when un1t answers.

I don't know if you just closed it as "you won't do" - which is fine btw. But if you wanted to do it - it's not visible
